How to Talk to Patients About Using AI During Consults

More and more clinicians are using AI tools during their consults—whether it’s transcribing notes, generating letters, or helping streamline admin tasks. But while these tools offer huge benefits, they can sometimes raise questions for patients: "Is this recording me?" "Where does the data go?" "Is this replacing your care?"
Here’s how to have simple, transparent conversations that build trust and confidence while using AI in the room.
1. Be upfront and matter-of-fact
Patients appreciate honesty. Instead of avoiding the topic, a quick, confident mention is best.
Example: "Just a heads up—I’ll be using a secure AI tool to help me write up your notes as we go. It saves me time on admin and lets me focus more on you."
2. Clarify what the AI does (and doesn’t do)
Make it clear that the AI isn’t diagnosing or making decisions—you are. The tool is just assisting with documentation.
Reassuring line: "It doesn’t replace anything clinical—it just helps record what we’re discussing, so I don’t have to type while we talk."
3. Emphasise security and privacy
Security is a common concern, so address it proactively.
You can say: "The audio isn’t stored anywhere, and your information is processed securely according to healthcare privacy standards."
4. Focus on benefits to the patient
Patients respond well to hearing how it helps them:
More eye contact
More accurate notes
Faster follow-up
Example: "Using this means I can send your letter to the GP today, and you won’t need to repeat your story."
5. Offer a chance to ask questions
Most people are curious, not resistant. A quick "Let me know if you have any questions about it" gives patients room to speak up without making it a big deal.
Final Thought
AI tools are there to support the consult—not interfere with it. A quick, calm explanation goes a long way in helping patients feel included, respected, and confident in the care they’re receiving.
